Mother of three children, 33-years old Sonia Blanchette, who is accused of drowning her own children last December, is found by court to have the ability to understand the charges she is facing. Though, the court will still have to determine whether she is completely fit for trial of charges laid against her, i.e. premeditated murder.

This Friday, the ruling announced at a Drummondville court room disclosed results of a report presented including the tests conducted at a Sherbrooke hospital. The report claims that Blanchette seems less disoriented, compared to her condition at the time she was previously brought in court, even though she avoided talking or making eye contact. Sonia Blanchette is indicted with three counts of first-degree murder charges because of the deaths of her two-year-old Anais, four-year-old Loic and five-year-old Lorelie. Blanchette was allowed to visit the children for one day in every two weeks only, along with the conditionality of supervision of her mother. Though her visit on Dec. 2, 2012 was held without the presence of her mother on at 596 Turcotte in Drummondville.

Blanchette was kept in the hospital for almost three days after her children’s death because she attempted to commit suicide with poisoning. Technically, the criteria for determining the eligibility of standing on trial depends on three factors namely ability to understand the charges, have a basic understanding of the way a trial works and to be able to cooperate with a defense attorney. First of the three have been established, whereas the remaining two are still yet to be determined through more tests.
