New recently acquired statistics have suggested that Canadians, who have already received flu shot this year, have almost halved their risk of exposure. A flu expert from British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Danuta Skowronski, stated that “It seems that this vaccine is cutting your risk of influenza in half, which … is still important protection, especially if you’re a high-risk person.” Dr. Skowronski supervises the surveillance network through which the data was obtained to form these statistics.
Skowronski mentioned that this data gives an important message to the medical advisors, who are taking care of people at high risk of influenza, if they become infected. She alleged that doctors shall not assume beforehand that since patients have received vaccination, they cannot be affected by influenza this winter. In fact, she alleged that for such patients, the use of antiviral drugs will become necessary in case they are infected. These approximate statistics of mid-season flu vaccine efficiency were drawn from a surveillance network of almost two hundred family doctors, along with a community of physicians, all over the country’s five most populous provinces, namely Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.
This network is operated by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, along with recommendation of provinces. The data submitted by these physicians to the network was scrutinized, assembled and evaluated by Dr. Skowronski and colleagues over the weekend. This sort of work studies are a key to take care of patients effected by influenza-like illness, as it determines the possibility of actually being infected with flu depending on whether they received a flu shot.
