Plans to build a further 160-bed expansion to the Milner Ridge Correctional Centre were announced today by Attorney General Andrew Swan and Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton.

"This expansion continues Manitoba’s aggressive efforts to increase capacity to the adult correctional system," said Swan. "We are working to meet the needs of staff and inmates in a safer, more secure and effective environment."

"The unit will follow a design adapted from a recent addition to the existing facility completed in 2008," said Ashton. "A lot of the necessary infrastructure such as food handling, water and waste-water treatment systems are in place or can easily be expanded to accommodate more capacity at Milner Ridge."

Design work is underway now. The project will be tendered in fall 2010, with construction beginning spring 2011 and completion expected by fall 2012.

This latest 160-bed building will be in addition to a 64-bed expansion already underway. Modular construction is being used in that project to speed the construction process, making the beds available more quickly. Combined, the two projects will bring the total ideal capacity of the Milner Ridge Correctional Centre to
524 inmates.

Since 1999, 419 beds have been added to Manitoba’s adult correctional system, Swan said.  In this year alone, shovels will be in the ground adding another 249 beds including 40 at The Pas Correctional Centre, 80 at the Brandon Correctional Centre and the 64-bed expansion already underway at Milner Ridge, he said. Sixty-five news beds will be added to the women’s correctional system with the new women’s facility being built in Headingley to replace the Portage Women’s Correctional Centre.
