Elections Canada has publicly released the documents depicting that Peter Penashue, who recently resigned as Conservative cabinet minister due to spending irregularities in his campaign, has repaid an estimate of almost $50,000 in improper donations. The corrected return for the 2011 campaign was submitted to the Elections Canada by Penashue, and later published on its website showing that he accepted 28 separate illegal contributions during the campaign.

Consequently, Penashue made the decision of quitting Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet as well, as he announced that he will rerun for the Conservatives in a coming byelection for the sake of clearing the air. Even though Penashue has made the announcement of resigning recently, the record of Elections Canada confirms that he had already paid back $26,850 last November. Penashue was elected at his position in the parliament by defeating his Liberal incumbent, Todd Russell, by mere 79 votes in 2011. A previous review of Elections Canada revealed that Penashue had only spent $4,000 above his limit of just under $84,500.

However, it was later revealed that he apparently received free flights costing thousands of dollars during his expansive and remote riding. Along with the refunded donations of $18,710 to the Provincial Airlines Ltd., he also paid pack a sum of $5,500 from a St. John’s construction company that had been listed under five individual employees. Penashue has expressively blamed the campaign problems on an “inexperienced volunteer” in his organization, i.e. his official agent, Reginald Bowers.
