The Quebec Liberals have elected a former health minister, Philippe Couillard, as their newest party leader. Addressing to a convention of faithful party workers gathered at the Verdun Auditorium in Montreal on Sunday, Couillard stated that “today a race ends, but today a march begins.”

The newly elected leader of Quebec’s Liberal party, who had returned from political retirement to take part in the first ballot, alleged that he intends to remain focused on renewal of the party and escalating the province’s place in Canada. Couillard mentioned that he plans to unite Quebecers under the Liberal banner, regardless of their allegiance with federalism “out of passion, or out of reason.” A sum of total 2,377 party delegates had convenedfrom all riding associations throughout the province participated in the election of new Quebec Liberal Party leader, which is also said to be the last delegated convention in the history of the party. Couillard was victorious of the three-way race with a majority of 58.5 per cent vote, followed by a former transport minister, Pierre Moreau, who came in second with 22 per cent, leaving the former finance minister, Raymond Bachand, in the last position with 19.5 per cent.

Couillard claims that he does not intends to grab a national assembly seat any soon, asserting that “this is not a priority for me.” The former health minister stated that he has prioritized “to mobilize the party. To go around Quebec, to see the members, find candidates, organize regional meetings toward the general convention.” He added that “I’m not going to rush to the assembly. I have work to do with the party.”
