A Canadian multi-instrumentalist, Gianni Luminati, claims to have been working tirelessly for years in attempts to find himself a breakthrough in the music industry, under the banner of a band named “Walk Off the Earth.” And now, as a direct result of one single bleary-eyed night of labour, it has happened.

In the early days of January 2012, Luminati and his fellow bandmates spent a considerable amount of time recording a video of all five group members trying out Gotye’s sad hit song, titled “Somebody That I Used to Know” on a single acoustic guitar. The group had been using a brand-new camera, which they barely knew how to use, stacked near the corner to include everyone in the frame. It was pretty clear that the group did not have any high expectations from it. Luminati confirms that “we didn’t even think it was our best video when we put it out.” He explained that “we knew the song was strong. We thought it was a cool idea. But we had lots of videos out already and we thought it was just another video.”

However, the video became a sensational hit on the globally acknowledged video-sharing website, YouTube, securing an unimaginable 147 million views and becoming one of the most-watched clips of 2012. To be precise, the video was placed second, leaving the irrepressible South Korean meme machine Psy on the top. Inquired about his feelings, Luminati shook his head and alleged that “I really don’t know man,” explaining that “It happened so fast.”
