The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the Government of Israel’s announcement on restrictions on Gaza:

“Canada welcomes the decision of the Government of Israel to ease restrictions on transfers of supplies into Gaza. This should increase the amount of humanitarian aid reaching the affected population of Gaza.

“Canada recognizes Israel’s legitimate security concern and its right to protect itself and its residents from Hamas and other terrorist attacks. Canada continues to call for the immediate return of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit to his family in Israel.

“The Government of Israel has indicated that it welcomes cooperation and coordination with its international and regional partners in implementing this policy. Canada looks forward to positive action in this regard, and to the swift implementation of these changes.

“Canada joins with others in urging those wishing to deliver humanitarian goods to do so through the established channels.”

Minister Lawrence Cannon once again made no mention of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
