Ottawa police confirmed that a suspicious package was discovered at Department of National Defence headquarters on Tuesday, which was found during an X-ray by police and revealed to have had elements consistent to a spontaneous explosive device. The police timely responded to the situation at 101 Colonel By Dr. at almost around 3:15 ET on Tuesday afternoon as it quickly shutdown the Mackenzie King Bridge during the rush hour, resulting in major traffic disruptions in downtown Ottawa.

A team consisting of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives expertise was shaped under the supervision of Ottawa police and RCMP to attend the scene. A press release from the Defence Minister Peter MacKay’s office stated that a robot was used to remove the suspicious package. Ottawa police Insp., Michael Maloney, stated that the X-ray revealed the presence an alleged timing device and an electronic trigger, but he confirmed that at no time was public ever exposed to danger. He explained that police used a water bottle charge, which itself contains a small amount of explosive, to blast the package and make it safe.

A statement from the office of Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews, alleged that Canada’s security agencies are “very vigilant” in trying to find possible dangers. He stated that “I’m not surprised that there are people out there who want to see harm done to their fellow citizens, our government has taken numerous actions to ensure they’re held accountable.” He further added that “I know it almost seems trite to say we’re living in a new world where there are dangers. That’s been demonstrated by the events of the past couple of weeks and people should always be alert.”
