Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford has declared to have cancelled next week’s casino vote at council, asserting that the deal is “dead” in case the province does not commits to a funding formula meeting the requirement of at least $100-million a year hosting fee. The announcement was made by Mayor Ford at a hastily called news conference at city hall on Thursday afternoon.

The mayor, who has been very supportive of a casino, mentioned at a news conference that he is still a staunch supporter for the massive gambling facility, though he alleged I’m “not married to a casino.” He demanded that the city must be allowed its “fair share,” i.e. a hosting fee of at least $100-million. He stated that “if the province won’t agree to that $100-million, then, folks, the deal is dead.” He explained to have contacted the premier’s office numerously but asserted to have not gotten a decisive answer. Ford alleged that “I’m sick and tired of playing games.” Ford straight-forwardly mentioned that “I will not ask council to go through a very divisive and grueling debate next week to approve a casino that the premier is no longer interested in.”

On the other hand, in response to the press conference, the spokesperson for Finance Minister Charles Sousa, Susie Heath, mentioned in an e-mail that “as the Minister has said, the City of Toronto should make its decision based on the various characteristics of a casino.” It was added that “We appreciate the Mayor’s comments but we’ll put out the formula when we’re ready and are confident that it is fair to all municipalities.”
