Conservative MP Mike Allen has recommended Senator Mike Duffy to offer resignation in light of the ongoing and seemingly ever-growing controversy shadowing his expense scandal. The Tobique-Mactaquac MP commented on the situation on Wednesday, asserting that Duffy shall seriously consider his future as a senator. Allen alleged that he’d like to give the suffering senator some very simple advice, stating that “I’d say, ‘Mike, I think you should seriously contemplate your future as a senator. … Mike you need to reflect on that, if it was my decision, I’d resign’.”
It was confirmed by The Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday that Harper’s chief of staff, Nigel Wright, personally wrote a cheque of amount more than $90,000 in order to vouch for the improperly claimed housing expense by Senator Duffy. Duffy announced to quit the Conservative caucus on Thursday, followed by Senator Pamela Wallin, whose travel expenses were under scrutiny as well, on Friday. Meanwhile, the Liberal Senator under scrutiny, Mac Harb, declared to have resigned from his party’s caucus over the same reasons. Moreover, Harper’s chief of staff, Wright, also announced to have decided to resign from his position and assured in a press statement that the Prime Minister was not aware of how Duffy’s expenses were repaid “either before or after the fact.”
Addressing the Conservative Party’s caucus on Tuesday, Harper mentioned that “I don’t think any of you are going to be very surprised to hear that I’m not happy. I’m very upset about some conduct we have witnessed, the conduct of some parliamentarians and the conduct of my own office.”
