Mark Towhey personally revealed the news of himself being fired as Mayor Rob Ford’s chief of staff, although the reasons behind the decision remain a mystery. Speaking to reporters while leaving city hall on Thursday afternoon, Towhey alleged that he wasn’t surprised by the move, which comes has some amid growing pressure from councillors asking Ford to respond to the unverified allegations asserting him to have caught on camera while smoking cocaine.

Upon inquiry about his advice to the mayor, Towhey remained silent and answered that “my advice to the mayor is for the mayor.” It was reported by the Toronto Star last Thursday that two of its primary reporters witnessed a cellphone video showing the mayor smoking from a glass pipe. The Star claimed to have been approached by Somali drug dealers, who were intending to sell the video for a six-figure sum, which the newspaper refused. Upon inquiry by the reporters into the allegations last Friday, Mr. Ford briefly stated that the allegations are completely “ridiculous” and” absolutely not true,” although he has not spoken a word about it ever since.

Coun. Josh Matlow gave a statement on Thursday morning, asserting that “when the international media and the late night talk shows are focusing on the latest folly coming out of the mayor’s office it doesn’t do a good service for Toronto, so I hope the mayor will come forward and address this.” He added that “he needs to put Toronto before himself and help us move forward. We will see if that actually happens.”
