In a recent development of the controversy engulfing the Toronto mayor Rob Ford for almost ten days now, Ford’s press secretary and deputy press secretary have suddenly quit. The confirmation of the news was received through a brief statement emailed by the mayor’s office, which said that “the Mayor thanks both George and Isaac for their valuable contributions and wishes them the best in their future endeavours.” Furthermore, the statement announced that Sunny Petrujkic will be taking charge as the interim press secretary until further notice.

A CBC reporter, Jamie Strashin, cites several sources to claim that the two key staff members have quit “on principle.” These arguable major dismissals have come at a time, when only four days ago Mayor Ford’s chief of staff, Mark Towhey, was fired too. Exiting his office after almost 3 p.m., the mayor alleged that regardless of the dismissal of his three key staff members in less than a week, it would be “business as usual” at city hall. He stated that “I’m not going to get into personnel issues,” but “I wish them the best of success.” Soon after being fired, Towhey sent a controversial tweet which described both Christopoulos and Ransom as “2 outstanding, honest & honorable professionals for whom I have enormous respect.”

The turmoil started at Toronto Mayor’s office almost 10 days ago, when reporters of the Toronto Star and the U.S. gossip website Gawker initially reported to have viewed a video showing Rob Ford smoking crack. Since then, the mayor delayed but later denied the allegations, existence of such video or any cocaine problem.
