An 18-year-old Whitby teen has succumbed to her injuries after drinking from a vodka bottle which later turned out to contain methanol.

The teenager was drinking with several male friends at a residence in Whitby in the evening of Friday May 17, 2013. A friend had taken a bottle of vodka from a relative’s home and brought it to the party, not knowing the blue fluid inside was actually methanol and not vodka.

By the next day, the 18-year-old teenager and one of the boys – an 17-year-old Whitby male – became sick. By Saturday night and early Sunday morning, both were in hospital. The 17-year-old male underwent dialysis treatment and later recovered. The 18-year-old female was also treated, but slipped into a coma. She was pronounced dead on May 22. A third male did not consume as much of the methanol as the others therefore he was not as ill.
