On Sunday, May 26, 2013 the Ottawa Police Service along with the Ottawa Paramedics and Ottawa Fire Services, responded to a serious collision on Woodroffe Ave on the overpass of the 417 Highway.
Upon arrival the 70-year-old male driver of beige Hyundai Accent was pronounced dead at the scene. The 66-year-old female passenger of the same vehicle was transported to hospital with what was believed at the time to be serious injuries by paramedics. Her condition was later upgraded to satisfactory.
Investigation revealed that a black BMW driven by 28-year-old male was on the westbound off-ramp of the 417 attempting, to head southbound on Woodroffe Avenue, when he lost control of his vehicle as he was trying to negotiate the curve, struck the curb, crossed the two southbound lanes and jumped the median and struck the northbound Hyundai Accent before coming to a rest facing southbound in the northbound lanes of Woodroffe Ave. Neither the 28-year-old driver nor his 22-year-old male passenger were injured in this collision.
Alcohol was not a factor in this collision, but speed is being considered as a contributing factor in this collision.
The Ottawa Police Collision Investigation Unit will be continuing this investigation.
