A 19-year-old male has been charged after he allegedly tried to force a 16-year-old female into performing a sexual act in a wooded area in Oshawa.

On Friday, June 7, 2013, the suspect and the victim met at a house party in the Ritson Road South and Valley Road area of Oshawa. Later in the night, the two went for a walk and ended up in a wooded area. The victim stumbled and fell to the ground while they were walking. The suspect then attempted to force the victim into a sexual act. The victim was able to break away and call for help. A short time later, the victim’s friends confronted the suspect, who displayed a weapon (an extendable baton) before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

Officers located the suspect a short time later and placed him under arrest.

The victim was treated for minor physical injuries and was later released from hospital.

Vathanathas Tharmathasan, age 19, is charged with Sexual Assault and Weapon: Possession for Dangerous Purpose. He was held for a bail hearing.
