Alberta MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo, Mike Allen, openly announced his resignation from the Progressive Conservative caucus in result of being caught red-handed and arrested on Monday in St. Paul, Minn., in a prostitution sting. In a written statement issued on Tuesday, Allen stated that “Today, I informed the Chief Government Whip of a legal incident that I have been involved in.” He added that “pending resolution of this incident, I have resigned from the government caucus and all legislative committees effective immediately.”

Consequently, government whip, Steve Young, reciprocated in a press release confirming that he has accepted Allen’s resignation, though the office of Premier Alison Redford remained silent on the issue. In the statement issued by Allen, he directly apologized to his family, friends, constituents, colleagues and Albertans for “the embarrassment I caused.” He stated that “it is a mistake for which there are no excuses and for which I accept full responsibility.” Allen further added that “this is a deeply embarrassing moment and all I can say is that I am sorry and I humbly ask for forgiveness. I will work long and hard to regain the trust of the many I have let down.”

St. Paul Police revealed that Allen was caught after an undercover officer posted an ad for escort services on a local classified advertisement site called “Backpage,” in response to which Allen replied. St. Paul Police Department Spokesperson, Sgt. Paul Paulos, stated that “he did meet with two vice personnel from our police department and made arrangements for a service.”
