Alberta Premier Alison Redford informed reporters that she was disgusted to hear that her MLA for Fort McMurray, Mike Allen, was arrested in a prostitution sting while at a government visit to St. Paul Minnesota. During the premier’s breakfast at the Alberta Legislature on Thursday morning, she stated that “I was shocked and disappointed to see that conduct,” while also reassuring that “It’s not at all the standard of conduct that I expect from anyone in our caucus.” She alleged that “I was disgusted by it.”

51-year-old Allen was taken in police custody on Monday and now he awaits formal charges for answering an ad for escort services placed by undercover police officers in St. Paul. Redford highlighted that prostitution is specially a very sensitive issue for her, as she explained that “when I was justice minister we started doing work with respect to sexual exploitation of women and human trafficking.” She added that “this is an issue that is very close to my heart”. Redford assured reporters that she has made Allen repay his expenses for the business trip, as she alleged that “as soon as I heard that this had happened I asked for that and I understand he has issued a cheque for all the expenses that (were) appropriate.”

Upon inquiry if Redford would allow Allen to return as MLA in case no charges are laid, she replied that “I am very troubled by that.” Officials in St. Paul, Minnesota have yet to decide whether Allen is to be formally charged with soliciting for prostitution.
