Two of the most dominant railway operators of Canada have toughened their safety standards in light of the dreadful calamity that occurred in Lac-Mégantic when a train derailment incident killed dozens and devastated the community. In result of July 6 disaster, when an unattended 72-car Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway train carrying oil derailed, caught fire and exploded, Canadian Pacific Railway has decided to restructure its general operating instructions.

Spokesperson for CP, Ed Greenberg, stated that “the recent situation gave us a chance to thoroughly review our safety procedures,” adding that “the result is that we have now strengthening our operating procedures in some key areas that were identified from what recently occurred.” The three major amendments made to the safety procedures by rail carrier include that all locomotives be locked in case it is necessary to leave a train unattended outside a terminal or yard. Even though this rule is already practiced in some high-risk locations, it will now be formally extended across the network. Secondly, the train brake-setting procedures are braced to meet or exceed all regulations, and lastly all trains containing regulated commodities will not be allowed anymore to be left unattended on main line tracks.

The carrier promised that it will continue to “meet or exceed” all federal operating and safety regulations and rules, while Greenberg alleged that the company routinely looks for ways to strengthen its safety policies. He mentioned that “we felt implementing additional safety measures at this time was the prudent step to take.”
