Mayor Rob Ford, along with the rest of city council, is expected to learn more regarding the extent of help they will be bestowed by the province in its contribution to a Scarborough subway today. The councilors voted to a majority of 28-16 on Wednesday to extend the Bloor-Danforth subway line into Scarborough from Kennedy station, rather than building the controversial light-rail line proposed earlier.

Even though the light rail proposal was completely funded by Queen’s Park, city has now asked for more money and cooperation from the provincial and federal governments to compensate for the subway, which will cost approx. $1 billion more. The city has requested the provincial Liberals to pay up $1.8 billion that it had pledged for the light rail project, while it seeks half of the project’s capital costs to be paid by the federal government, i.e. an estimate of at least $400 million.

The federal government has so far refrained from making any commitment to the project. Requests for comments by the Canadian Press were also let down by the federal finance ministry. Meanwhile, Ontario Transportation Minister, Glen Murray, previously alleged that he will not finalize any commitment until city council has finally made its decision regarding a business plan for a subway. Before the council vote, Murray tweeted on his professional Twitter account that “I look forward to tomorrow morning,” adding that “stay tuned” for update. His tweet stated: “I would like to thank Toronto City Council for clarifying their position. I look forward to tomorrow morning. Stay tuned. #onpoli #topoli”
