According to financial figures entailed in the Senate Administration, the Deloitte audit into Senator Pamela Wallin’s expense claims has cost an extraordinary amount $126,998, i.e. even more than what the Senator is asked to repay. Senate is reportedly informed that Ms. Wallin’s audit was the most expensive of four undertaken so far and almost tripled its original estimate. The initial estimate regarding the cost was around $43,408 that rose by $25,990 before raising another $57,600 this quarter.

The audit conclusively recommended that Ms. Wallin shall return an amount of $121,348 in lieu of wrongly claimed travel expenses. The auditor’s report showed that approximately three-quarters of the total amount were for non-Senate business travelling, while the remaining cost was incurred by Ms. Wallin during regular stops in Toronto, where she owns a condo. The report confessed that auditors found that an estimated 73 per cent of Ms. Wallin’s travel claims were genuine. Comparatively, the audits into the expenses of Senators Mac Harb, Mike Duffy and Patrick Brazeau cost much less, i.e. an estimated $101,459. These three senators were primarily under review for their housing claims.

Even though Ms. Wallin allegedly negated her audit process as “fundamentally flawed and unfair,” leader of the subcommittee heading the examination, Senator Gerald Comeau, disregarded her remarks. He replied that “obviously Senator Wallin has her ideas on the fact she did not like the Deloitte results. We happen to think that Deloitte did a tremendous job. We happen to view them as very professional, highly regarded.”
