Owner of the company whose cube van slammed into a Toronto transit bus on the city’s northern limit yesterday assured that its driver was working with them for several years and was properly licensed. The accident resulted in the death of a 52-year-old passenger and laid injuries to a dozen others.

Investigators, upon inquiry from eye witnesses, have raised doubt regarding the driver’s actions leading to the crash. One of the witnesses allegedly testified having seen the driver talking on a cellphone at the time his vehicle veered into the oncoming lanes on Steeles Avenue, went over the curb and thrashed into the passenger side of the TTC bus as it was idling at a stop. Police have identified the women killed during the incident, who was about to disembark. Apart from that, a dozen other people were also injured and shifted to hospital, one of which suffered life-threatening injuries but has since improved since and is in stable condition.

The company operating the van, Wilby Commercial Ltd., allegedly imports and distributes snack foods from the Philippines. The president of the company assured that the driver was properly licensed and the cube van was also operating under insurance. A spokesperson of Wilby Commercial, Willie Lao, stated that the driver has been with the company for “a few years.” The accident took place at about 6.5 kilometres away from Wilby Commercial’s offices in Markham, just north of Toronto. The van was reportedly headed eastbound on Steeles at the time it veered into the westbound lanes.
