Both Conservative MPs who allegedly hosted fundraising events in honor of Senator Pamela Wallin have claimed to have no knowledge that the senator billed taxpayers for her travel costs. The events hosted by MP Harold Albrecht and MP Kellie Leitch were highlighted by auditors in a report released this week. The audit concluded that Ms. Wallin shall return wrongly claimed $121,000 in improper expenses, some of it for partisan work.

Mr. Albrecht, MP for Kitchener-Conestoga, explained that Ms. Wallin informed auditors that she spoke at a Sept. 18, 2010, event about “Canada’s role in Afghanistan and Canada no longer being a spectator nation.” However, the announcement for the event has no official reference to those topics. In fact in contrary, the event was described as a fundraiser titled as a “Big Tent Event at Harold’s farm, with Senator Pamela Wallin.” The event was ticketed at $20 each, or $60 for a family, and featured “food, camaraderie, hayrides and a very special guest.” Auditors have pointed out that Ms. Wallin should pay back $689.08 for a flight to Toronto to attend the event.

On the other hand, the second event took place at Jan. 17, 2011, and was hosted by Dr. Leitch at the time she was not elected as an MP and almost two months before she won the Conservative nomination. She was a star candidate who ousted former Conservative MP Helena Guergis, who was running as an independent in Simcoe-Grey. Dr. Leitch is now Minister of Labour and for Status of Women.
