Ontario Premier, Kathleen Wynne, has recently announced an interim deal that has been put in place to keep open an internationally renowned freshwater research station in northwestern Ontario. The interim deal will stay effective until ongoing negotiations are finished this fall regarding the transfer of the facility from the federal government to a non-profit environmental agency.

In an announcement made in the recent past, Ottawa declared that the research being carried out at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) does not fit its mandate any more, hence it disclosed Sept. 1 to be the final day until when it would operate the facility in case no other organization is interested to take it over. Consequently, the Winnipeg-based organization, International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) has shown interest to take responsibility for the ELA, along with the land owned by the Ontario government. The interim deal makes sure that the scientists working at the institute shall not be barred from the station this fall.

Making the announcement in Kenora, Ms. Wynne alleged in a statement that “I am thrilled that a decision has been reached to keep Experimental Lakes Area open.” She added that “the research performed here provides invaluable knowledge about climate change and helps protect freshwater systems around the world. I want to thank all parties for working together to help make Ontario a world-class destination for scientific research.” The deal implicates that federal department will continue running the ELA, but DFO will no longer participate in any research there.
