With history on their side and the game presented by Crosstown Auto Centre, FC Edmonton were able to keep up the undefeated tradition against New York opposition on home soil.

In the 8th minute, Eddie midfielder Neil Hlavaty found some space along the far side of the Cosmos 18-yard box and sent a pin-point accurate ball onto the head of striker Anthony Adur. Adur’s free header ended up going over the bar and out for a Cosmos goal-kick.

The Cosmos picked up momentum as the half continued. New York midfielder Hagop Chirishian found himself with the ball in front of the Eddies goal, but scuffed the shot and the FC Edmonton backline recovered to clear the chance.

It was the Eddies that had the final say before the whistle. A free kick was given just outside the Cosmos area. Laing took the shot for the Eddies and ‘keeper Reynish made a great save to keep the ball out of the net.

“I’m very pleased defensively with how we’ve played and have limited them to one shot on goal and some long shots,” said FCE head coach Colin Miller. “What I’m disappointed in is our front players not holding the ball up.  If we can do that it will give the midfield players time to get up front to support them.”

The Eddies and Cosmos headed into the locker room deadlocked after the first 45 minute at 0-0.

FC Edmonton earned the first chance of the second half with a play between striker Corey Hertzog and half-time sub Gagan Doseanjh as they raced forward to take on the Cosmos defense. Doseanjh’s first touch from Hertzog’s pass let him down as Reynish came off his line to deny a chance on goal.

FC Edmonton’s breakthrough was once again through midfielder Chris Nurse. Hertzog got the initial header on target, but Reynish once again made the save. The rebound fell to Hlavaty who sent it across and found Nurse free to finish off the chance. 1-0 Eddies.

The Eddies momentum continued after the goal. Hlavaty was able to find more space out wide and sent in a ball in the 69th minute that forward Daryl Fordyce made contact with, but it went just wide of the net.

The Cosmos found their way back into the match in the 79th minute when a hand ball was called  just outside the FC Edmonton box. Midfielder Marco Senna took the free kick and the shot made its way under the wall and passed Parker in net. The game was even a 1-1.

The remainder of the match was tense as the Cosmos took the opportunity to press the Eddies defense for the final 10 minutes plus stoppage time. The Eddies played to a third straight draw in the fall season.

“It’s a disappointing result for us because we were at home and I think we were the better team on the day.  One lapse in concentration cost us,” said goal-scorer Chris Nurse after the match.

FC Edmonton now head to Minnesota to take on Minnesota United FC on Saturday September 7. Fans can catch the match at the Pint off Whyte – FC Edmonton’s official location for away game viewing parties.
