They two highly watched Canadians, who were illegally detained without any charges in a jail in Cairo, were unexpectedly freed from police custody in Egypt after seven weeks. A close relative of one of the men have alleged that they are expected to soon return home by the end of this week, whereas an Egyptian official claims that the men’s fate remains in the hands of a judge.

During an interview, Cecilia Greyson said her brother John Greyson and Tarek Loubani are both feeling much better and are using the delay to deal with unspecified bureaucratic glitches to acclimatize to their freedom. Greyson informed The Canadian Press that “we knew all along that it was going to be at least a few days for them to actually be able to leave Egypt.” She explained that “there is some bureaucracy that the Canadian consular staff in Cairo are working to get through.” Greyson particularly mentioned that the pair were released “without conditions” and were in a safe location with consular officials.

On the contrary, spokesperson for Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Badr Abdelatty, mentioned that the men are still subjected to an active investigation, while adding that it has not been determined whether they are allowed to leave the country or not. In a phone interview to The Canadian Press, Mr. Abdelatty alleged that “the public prosecutor office and the investigative judge should decide whether they will be tried before a court, or the whole investigation file should be closed and then they’ll have the right to go home.” He added that “it’s completely up to the judiciary. The investigative judge is the only one who should decide.”
