With survivors of the Huronia Regional Centre sitting the visitors gallery of the Ontario legislature, NDP Community and Social Services critic Cheri DiNovo called on the Premier to provide closure and commit to an official apology from her office, rather than just one from the Minister of  Community and Social Services.

“Premier, the survivors don’t want to be seen as clients of the Ministry of Community and Social Services, and they also don’t want to be seen just as part of a legal action against the Attorney General,” said DiNovo. “What they do want, what they do require, is to be seen as full citizens of the province of Ontario, which is what they would be if you gave them an apology.”

A historic class action lawsuit launched by former residents of the institution was recently settled with Ontario government. Terms of the settlement included a formal apology.

“The most important part of the settlement was that they would finally receive an apology for the abuse and horrible neglect related to government action and inaction,” explained DiNovo.

“Will the Premier commit today that the official apology will come from her?” DiNovo asked.

As survivors watched from the gallery, Premier Wynne dodged DiNovo’s request for an apology, deferring to the Attorney General’s office.
