Canadian Olympic has officially unveiled the formal jerseys of Team Canada that will be worn throughout the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia. The new hockey jerseys knitted by Nike were unveiled for the first time at a press conference held at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, i.e. located in the old site of Toronto’s historic Maple Leaf Gardens on Monday morning.

Three players wore different jerseys designed separately for men’s, women’s and sledge hockey team’s, all of whom glided across the ice while a background music played to show off the newly unveiled designs. One of the designs include a noticeable maple leaf shape on contrasting stripes on the red and white jerseys, while another black jerseys is emblazoned with the word “CANADA” written across a thick red stripe. A senior creative director at Nike, Ken Black, mentioned that he always designs with the athlete in mind. He alleged that “when we think about performance, there are always two pieces to that.” He added that “one is function and the other is the aesthetic.” Black explained that he wanted to work with a classic design, with colours that are “supremely Canadian.”

Previously in September, a photo was leaked throughout the internet showing Chicago Blackhawks forward, Jonathan Toews, wearing a new jersey design, which spurred extreme remarks from audience, most of which were largely negative reaction including Sports Illustrated columnist Allan Muir’s comparison of the design to an “oversized pajama top.” The jerseys officially unveiled Monday match the one he was photographed in.
