An upsetting series of events lead a mayoral candidate, Claire Le Bel, to acquire police protection in scandal-plagued Laval, Que. Le Bel initially released a telephone conversation recording of her with her former boss, ex-mayor Gilles Vaillancourt, who is currently facing criminal gangsterism charges. Regardless of his ongoing legal dilemmas, Vaillancourt offered to help Le Bell in her campaign, especially financing, which seemed quite similar to offers he has apparently made in the past to other politicians over the years.

Eventually, Le Bel refused the offer and has now publicly released the recording on Monday. However, on that same day, her campaign manager was assaulted in the evening. She informed a group of reporters gathered at a news conference on Tuesday that she fears for her safety and does not drives home alone any more. Consequently, Le Bel was granted police protection on her request, after which she affirmed that her aide is doing well after the Monday night assault. She further revealed that her campaign manager, Reny Gagnon, has officially filed a formal complaint with provincial police, though she refrained from revealing any detail into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Whereas, the 50-minute recording of a taped phone call was made by Le Bel in August, in which Vaillancourt inquires her about the campaign and discusses financing, before asking for a private meeting and offering help. Le Bel said that the investigators at the Quebec’s Charbonneau inquiry were immediately informed of the phone call but they deemed it to be of “low priority,” so she now decided to go public.
