89-year-old woman who came under legal scrutiny after refusing to fill out general census, Audrey Tobias, will hear court decision determining whether she goes to jail on sometime after 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Tobias was busy collecting and writing down her thoughts on Tuesday night, when she alleged that “I’m not going to work myself into anything,” and “it’s partly age — people get to the age where they take these things in their stride.”
Tobias has stated that she knowingly refused to fill out the short-form census, citing reason that Statistics Canada collects data through software acquired by Lockheed Martin, i.e. an American arms manufacturer. Exiting Old City Hall during lunch, she was cornered by more than few media reporters, where speaking to them, she alleged that publicity of last week’s one-day trial has pleased her. She mentioned that “I wanted to make the point that our government is on the wrong path, vis-à-vis the way it handles its military and defence.” Tobias asked “do you think I made that point? I think I did.”
Tobias admitted in the court last Wednesday that she deliberately refused to fill out the form, being aware that she could face a potential $500 fine and/or three months in jail. Loathing companies like Lockheed, longtime peace activist Tobias stated that “I would like our country to be peaceful,” and “giving (the contract) to a military company sends a message that we support military solutions.”
