The first Muslim leader to be elected to the Mayor’s office in a major North American city three years ago, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, has effortlessly won a re-election on Monday after his dominant first term ended with a stellar performance during devastating floods.

41-year-old Harvard graduate and former McKinsey & Co consultant, Nenshi, was awarded a national profile regarding his efforts in response to the floods that swamped large parts of the city of 1.1 million in Canada’s costliest natural disaster. In the latest reelection, Nenshi secured a 74 percent of the vote against eight opponents, including a former provincial cabinet minister, a marijuana advocate and an anti-abortion activist. Speaking about his victory after the result was announced, Nenshi declared that “Calgarians have spoken loud and clear,” adding that “they’ve spoken loud and clear about the kind of community they want. A community of great, livable, walkable neighborhoods everywhere … not a community of never-ending sprawl.”

Nenshi became known, and gain vital popularity in his career, due to his ubiquitous presence during the floods that shuttered downtown Calgary for nearly a week in June. It was reported that he worked round-the-clock, hosting media briefings, warning about safety and posting a continuous string of Twitter updates, producing the Twitter tag #nap4nenshi and pictures of “Supernenshi,” with his chubby face Photoshopped onto a picture of Superman. At the time, Nenshi allegedly mentioned that “everybody asks me the question about how much sleep I have had, which means I must look terrible.”
