The Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, is set to officially launch a national campaign seeking to encourage Canadians to volunteer and find their “giving moment.” The Governor General is launching the “My Giving Moment” initiative in a move to inspire Canadians of all ages to start giving back to their community, which Mr. Johnston says is something in our national “DNA.”

In a statement issued by Mr. Johnston on Monday, he stated that “it’s really part of Canada’s history to be able to first of all survive and then thrive in a country with a harsh climate, where we had a frontier type of society and we had to clear the land…and we’re living our history out in a new way now.” Johnston is set to officially launch the campaign in front of a gathering at Ottawa’s Rideau Hall at 9:45 a.m. local time. He alleged that already many Canadians are donating their time, money and skills in order to assist others, but he wants to see even more Canadians discover their “giving instinct.” He alleged that “on a comparative scale, if you look at nations around the world, we do pretty well. (But) we’re not at the top.”

Statistics Canada survey 2010 narrates that an estimate of 47 per cent Canadians volunteer their time through a group or organization. Mr. Johnston stated that “I think our concern is first of all, let’s do something about the other half (that don’t volunteer),” adding that ” with the half that do, we’re finding that a small number of people are doing increasing number of hours, especially older people, and one of the challenges is to pass the torch to the next generation.”
