The base camp officials informed in a press release that four Marines were killed during a range maintenance at their Camp Pendleton, California.  The four Marines were trying to clear unexploded ordnance to make the campsite safer for future training exercises which lead to their death. An anonymous Marine official informed there was no live firing at the time of the sweep of explosive materials. The hapless incident took place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, 13th of November. The authorities are still investigating the cause and the identities of the dead Marine officials are not revealed yet, further delaying notification of relatives.

"We offer our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the families of the Marines lost today in this tragic accident," said Brigadier General John W. Bullard who is the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations West at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. "Our first priority is to provide the families with the support they need during this difficult time."

This is the first accident involving Marine officials after the mortar explosion accident in Nevada. The accident took place eight months, on the 11th of March. The accident killed seven Marine officials during a live fire training exercise. The Marine Corps investigation revealed that human-error was to blame for the unfortunate incident. According to their analysis, a Marine official mismanaged a 60 mm mortar tube which resulted in the detonation of a high explosive at that position. The inspection also unveiled the fact that the Marine officials involved in the accident had missed their ‘appropriate preparatory training’.
