The Canadian government has consistently repeated that it is in the loop and keeping an eye on the reports alleging that a New Democrat MP from Ontario, Rathika Sitsabaiesan, is being held under house arrest in Sri Lanka. The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Lynne Yelich, mentioned in a tweet posted on late Tuesday night that “Sri Lankan authorities have clarified with us there is no arrest warrant for @RathikaS. We will continue to follow closely until she is home.”
The unofficial reports from Sri Lankan media reports claim that Scarborough-Rouge River MP, Rathika Sitsabaiesan, is still held under an “unofficial” house arrest at her hotel in Jaffna, i.e. the capital city of the Northern Province in Sri Lanka. In tweet posted by Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, on Tuesday night, he mentioned that “Minister @Lynne_Yelich and I, and our staff are working on these reports of @RathikaS. We’ve been in contact.”
Along with the NDP being unable to confirm or deny the reports, even the MP’s own father, Sadasivam Sitsabaiesan, has revealed that Rathika’s older sister has been unable to speak with her since the reports emerged on Tuesday. The family made several attempts to contact her on a Sri Lanka number, but it is no longer functioning. Additionally, Sitsabaiesan complained that no government official or NDP party members made any contact with the family, due to which they are left stranded and are gaining their information from the internet.
