Local homicide investigators have confirmed that the dead body found in Guatemala is of a Canadian missionary, 64-year-old Brian Townsend, who disappeared in Belize on Christmas Day. According to Edmonton Journal, officers retrieved evidence of a struggle in Townsend’s apartment in the Valley of Peace in Belize. Guatemalan authorities disclosed having had found a body floating in the Mopan River on Dec. 27, though it was not positively identified until days later.

According to the police in the Benque Viejo area of Belize, after the body was positively identified to be of Townsend, the case was upgraded from a missing person to homicide investigation. Later on Thursday, Townsend’s family confirmed the news of his death via a post on Facebook, which said that “with grieving hearts we inform you that the body found in Guatemala is Brian Townsend.” An in-law of the family, Ian Lund, mentioned that “we want you to know how much it meant to us, the support and prayers we received from all of you. We have celebrated what Brian has been able to do in Belize and the difference he has made in the community of the Valley of Peace.”

Townsend was a former physical education teacher who first visited Belize in 2001 on a mission trip. Senior pastor at Edmonton South Seventh Day Adventist Church, John Murley, revealed that Townsend moved to Belize and started helping a vocational school in the Valley of Peace community almost nine years ago.
