Incumbent Mayor of Toronto, Mr. Rob Ford, has apparently made a possible violation of election rules right in the beginning of his campaign. Mr. Ford launched his campaign website on Monday afternoon, which though only included a total of two sentences but still managed to violate some rules. The website, RobFordForMayor.ca, greeted visitors by saying “Thank you for visiting the website,” and said “If you would like to contact Mayor Ford please send your inquiry to Mayor_Ford@toronto.ca or 416-397-FORD (3673).”

Quite noticeably, Mr. Ford used his city email address and the contact number for the mayor’s office, even though the city’s elections rules clearly indicate that “candidates are not allowed to use city resources or facilities to support their campaigns.” It is safe to assume that city resources include email accounts, phone lines, and city hall offices. The glitch was soon corrected on Monday night, when the website began saying: “Thank you for visiting the website. If you would like to contact Mayor Ford please call 416-233-6934,” which is the mayor’s home number.

Apart from that, Ford’s contender and former councilor, David Soknacki, though launched his mayoral campaign in profoundly high-minded fashion as he professed an ethics-and-transparency pledge.  However, despite those notions, the auto-reply message of Soknacki’s website had a stealthy message for those who signed up for email updates. The automated response said “thanks for your interest in David Soknacki’s campaign to ‘stop the crazy train’ and bring politically courageous, experienced and professional leadership to city hall.”
