The Conservative government has announced to have appointed the Canadian Ambassador to Israel from outside the Foreign Service, Vivian Bercovici, who is most noticeably a loyal supporter of Israel and an admirer of its prime minister. A lawyer who spent a major part of her life studying in Israel in the 1980s, Bercovici, has written several columns expressing complete support for Israel’s current leadership under Benjamin Netanyahu.

Defending the out-of-box decision made by the government, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird alleged that the decision to choose an envoy from outside the Foreign Service was simple as “we appointed somebody with the same policy as the government of Canada.” He added that “there’s nothing new.” It is no secret that the many consider the Conservatives’ policy on Middle East issues to be blatantly pro-Israel. This important appointment has come at a time when the Prime Minister is preparing to soon leave for first trip to the country and the West Bank later this month.

Meanwhile, the time of appointment is also of special significance since the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, is pressing the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority to negotiate a long-term peace deal. Commenting on that, Mr. Baird announced that Canada “stands ready to assist that process in any way it possibly can.” He refuted claims that the appointment will send a negative signal to Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, as he said that Ms. Bercovici will be ambassador to Israel, and it already has an envoy to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah.
