The Ontario government has disclosed its decision to spend almost $4-million next year to help teachers improve their mathematics teaching skills in order to combat the province’s meager test scores, though it completely opposed the idea of possibly revamping its math curriculum. This decision is prompted by statistic results and pressure from parents and educators, all of which sought to make the provincial governments across the country to do more in order to improve the way math is being taught.

Defending the decision on Wednesday, Education Minister Liz Sandals mentioned that the province will help by paying for more current teachers to take advanced qualifications courses in math. In addition to that, she explained that the province will also make sure that those in new two-year teachers’ college program spend more time learning to teach math. Addressing the reporters at inner-city Toronto elementary school, Ms. Sandals alleged that the “teachers are asking for more opportunities to advance their own knowledge of math and its instruction.” She added that “when we look at some of the jurisdictions that are similar to Ontario and where the results are better, what we often find is that there’s more extensive teacher training.”

However, Ms. Sandals completely rejected the idea of altering the province’s math curriculum. Upon inquiry if Ontario is considering a curriculum change, she replied “No.” She elucidated that the “curriculum’s an ongoing review and we’ve already checked in with the experts to make sure that the curriculum is there,” she said. “It’s more about making sure that math is taught really well in elementary school.”
