A request from a student of York University to not interact with fellow female students on religious grounds spurred a national debate yesterday, as intellectuals pondered over how far secular institutions should go to accommodate faith. The rare request was turned down by the young student’s sociology professor, who made the decision opposing the university administration in a standoff.
The incident took place last September, when a student enrolled for an online course at York University in Toronto urged his professor to exclude him from a cooperative study group as he wished to avoid interacting with women. In a letter written by the student, which was made public this week, he claims that “one of the main reasons that I have chosen Internet courses to complete my BA (Bachelor of Arts) is due to my firm religious beliefs, and part of that is the intermingling between men and women.” Moreover, the student whose religion was not revealed, added that “it will not be possible for me to meet in public with a group of women (the majority of my group) to complete some of these tasks.”
Soon after the sociology professor, J. Paul Grayson, turned down the request, his faculty dean, Martin Singer, ordered him to accommodate the student’s wishes. Even though the student withdrew his request and civilly thanked Grayson and the school for considering it, the issue ignited a serious debate on the topic in Canadian newspapers yesterday.
