Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, recently confirmed in a statement that two Canadians were among those killed in a brutal suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, which left at least 21 people dead. Local security forces explained that a Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up at a Kabul restaurant which was routinely filled with wealthy Afghans and foreigners. Soon after the suicide bomber exploded, two other attackers entered the restaurant and fired bullets into the crowd. Among the total 21 victims killed, thirteen were foreigners.

In his official statement issued on Friday, Mr. Baird mentioned that “Canada condemns in the strongest possible terms the targeted, cowardly terrorist attack today on a restaurant in Kabul.” He alleged that “on behalf of all Canadians, we extend our sincerest condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed and injured in this horrible and senseless act of terror.” Apart from that, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon have also mentioned that four UN personnel were also among those killed in a “horrific attack” and demanded an end to the violence. UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq alleged that Ban said “such targeted attacks against civilians are completely unacceptable and are in flagrant breach of international humanitarian law.”

On the other hand, The International Monetary Fund has also mentioned that its representative in Afghanistan, Wabel Abdallah, was also killed in the restaurant attack. IMF managing director, Christine Lagarde, stated that “our hearts go out to Wabel’s family and friends, as well as the other victims of this attack.”
