Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 4000 block of the Eastex Freeway (North Interstate Highway 59) about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 26).

The male victim, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Rossman and Officer P. Pham reported:

The driver of a white GMC Sonata was traveling southbound on the Eastex Freeway when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the freeway and crossed the grassy median of the exit ramp.  The Sonata then struck a concrete pillar and burst into flames.  The driver collapsed and died at the scene.  A passenger in the bed of the pickup was ejected but not seriously injured.  A witness pulled three males from the front seat of the vehicle.  One male was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition.  The other two were also transported to the same hospital in unknown conditions.

The investigation is continuing.
