Officials at Saint Mary’s University have confirmed having had suspended a total of nine varsity football players from the team after they were discovered to have had tweeted racist and sexist messages online. The tweets were initially flagged as inappropriate by the University of King’s college journalism school’s online publication, unews.ca, as it claimed that they endorsed acts of violence against women, rape and derogatory terms against homosexuals.

According to the reports, one such tweet from an athlete mentioned stated “that bitch bit me last night. Hope your dead in a ditch, you are scum,” whereas others included racial slurs against Asians and misogynistic jokes against women. The Halifax University previously gained international attention last September after a highly controversial video emerged showing students at a Frosh week event chanting slogans endorsing underage sex without consent. Addressing the disgraceful scandal, the university then initiated an independent investigation in December that contained 20 recommendations on “cultural changes to prevent sexual violence” on campus.

In an official statement issued by the officials at the university on Monday night, they formally condemned the actions of the players. Vice-President Academic and Research at the university, Dr. David Gauthier, mentioned that “the comments posted by these individuals are completely inappropriate and unacceptable.” He added that “they are inconsistent with our university values and with what we have committed to address as recommendations from the President’s Council Report.” However, the students have not yet been suspended from the university, though the school says the athletes may face further discipline if officials confirm having written the posts.
