Vancouver Island Police has confirmed to have contacted Pamela Anderson to discuss a recent claim by the B.C.-born actress, as she revealed to have been raped during her childhood. Anderson launched her animal welfare charity, The Pamela Anderson Foundation, at an event Friday during the Cannes International Film Festival in France.

During her opening address at the event, Anderson revealed to the crowd about her “most painful memories,” including allegations of rape and sexual abuse she experienced while growing up in Ladysmith. According to statement issued by Cpl. Darren Lagan, Ladysmith RCMP is now contacting Anderson. He mentioned that “we are aware of the recent statements made by Ms. Anderson at an event in Cannes, France.” Lagan added that “given the nature of the allegations, an investigator with the Ladysmith RCMP is in the process of reaching out to Ms. Anderson to discuss this matter with her directly.” Whereas, Lagan alleged that RCMP would not provide further comment on the matter “out of respect for Ms. Anderson’s privacy.”

At the launch, 46-year-old Anderson explained how the experiences left her feeling suicidal. She mentioned that “at the risk of over-exposing myself, again, or being inappropriate, again, I thought I might share with you why I am doing this.” It was added that “I did not have an easy childhood, I was molested from age six by a female babysitter.” Anderson continued that “I went to her boyfriend’s house, and his older brother decided to teach me backgammon, which led into a back massage, which led into rape — my first heterosexual experience. He was 25 years old and I was 12.”
