A cargo trick caught on fire at Swift Current on Wednesday night, leading many residents to witness the blazing cargo. According to a

statement issued by Capt. Greg Campbell of the Swift Current fire department, “the fireworks were some of the cargo, which is what garnered most of the attention.” It was explained that “the fireworks went off for probably close to an hour. It kind of went in spurts, (but was) very concentrated for about a 15-to 20-minute period. Even as the incident was winding down, we still had the odd one going off.”

The delivery truck was destined to reach Swift Current for unloading, although the driver did not realize he was leaving a trail of diesel fuel on the offramp. The driver thinks the fire began in the engine compartment while fire department officials say they believe something ruptured in the truck’s fuel system. The driver did not realize the severity of the blaze until it was too late, he failed to grab his cellphone and quickly jumped out of the passenger-side door to safety.

The courier truck caught extreme fire on 11th Avenue Northwest, directly under the Highway 1 eastbound overpass until firefighters arrived. Campbell alleged that “we dumped a lot of water on it,” and “the main objective was to keep the bridge cool. The truck was already notably a lost cause, but the bridge was our big concern at that point.” Speaking about the damage caused to the overpass, Campbell alleged “there was definitely some spalling of the concrete on the other side of the bridge from the heat.”
