President of the Ottawa Rowing Club, Lana Burpee, was schooled to see a float plane take a flight from under the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge in Ottawa last weekend, when she was at the dock on the Ottawa River. According to a report by National Post, Burpee was among the club’s athletes on Saturday morning, who were preparing for the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, when she heard an eccentric noise and astonishingly saw a small float plane rising out on the water.
Remembering the incident, Burpee stated that “I’m watching the plane from the dock and I’m seeing its nose lifting and I thought ‘What could it be doing?’” A small video about the incident was recorded and uploaded to YouTube, which shows the plane take off from the Ottawa River and fly below the bridge. The video shows a group of rowers on the water, who are scared by witnessing the scene and some can even be heard screaming and yelling as the plane flies under the bridge that connects Ottawa and Gatineau, Que.
Burpee alleged that it was very odd to see a plane on the Ottawa River, especially around the downtown core. She stated that “honestly, I thought he was suicidal. I thought he was going to try to smash into the side of the bridge, but fortunately the pilot was able to get through that ascent safely.” She mentioned that pilot was “a heartbeat away it could have been the worst-case scenario.”
