NDP Foreign Affairs critic, Paul Dewar, has raised eyebrows over Ottawa’s decision to send almost 100 military advisers to Iraq in order to aid the forces fighting the Islamic state, but in a non-combat mission. Dewar stressed that the mission should have first been discussed in the parliament.
Mr. Dewar mentioned that the federal government’s decision to send members of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR) to Iraq came as a “surprise” to the NDP. Last week, Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, and Liberal MP, Marc Garneau, accompanied Mr. Dewar on a trip to Iraq in order to acquire first-hand understanding of the toll the Islamic State militants are taking on the region. Mr. Baird announced millions of dollars in humanitarian aid for the country during the trip, along with two RCAF transport aircraft to help deliver supplies to Kurdish forces.
However, Dewar now mentioned that “this came as a surprise for us, and frankly the decision is puzzling, because all of the officials we met, including the president of Iraq and president of the Kurdistan regional government, said we do not need boots on the ground.” In fact, Mr. Dewar pointed out that Canada should instead be focusing on providing resources to Iraqi people who are internally displaced in their attempt to flee the militants. Furthermore, Dewar even revealed that the Iraqi officials had also unambiguously asked for the same thing, so he urged that “if anything, send over people to build refugee camps.”
