Top criminal lawyer, Marie Henein, has taken over the case of former CBC radio host, Jian Ghomeshi, entangled in sexual assault allegations. For Henein, Ghomeshi went from punchline to client as she recently mentioned at a lawyers’ gala that “as criminal lawyers we represent people who have committed heinous acts. Acts of violence. Acts of depravity. Acts of cruelty. Or as Jian Ghomeshi likes to call it, foreplay.” Almost 450 lawyers were present at a gala on Oct. 29.

However, her latest client who is under investigation by police for serious allegations of physical and sexual assault, Ghomeshi, is not likely to mind her snub due to her remarkable reputation for winning. Observers of the criminal justice system have alleged that Henein is the lawyer Ghomeshi needs. She was described as ruthless, smart, hardworking, an exceptional strategist popular for eviscerating cross-examinations. It was highlighted that she is the go-to criminal lawyer in high-profile cases, being on on the top of the list of barristers whom lawyers themselves would call, if they got into trouble.

Henein is still remembered for getting all charges dropped in 2010 against the former attorney-general of Ontario, Michael Bryant, including criminal negligence causing death, after bike courier Darcy Allan Sheppard died. Bryant mentioned in his book that Henien was the “finest barrister I ever met” and she “seemed to channel Hannibal Lecter.” Bryant wrote in his 2012 book, 28 Seconds, that “so able was she to find a person’s deepest frailties and exploit them.”
