Vancouver’s TransLink has released report of the independent review into the service disruptions that caused the shutdown in July, while also announcing its decision to implement all 20 recommendations made by it. According to the report published by Toronto’s GO transit former president, Gary McNeil, the recommendations are estimated to cost $71 million.

Report into ‘The Independent Review: SkyTrain Service Disruptions on July 17 and July 21, 2014’ states that the incidents highlighted the vulnerabilities in the system. According to TransLink CEO, Ian Jarvis, the service disruptions were “unacceptable to customers and unacceptable to us.” It was added that “customers had every right to be angry and frustrated, especially those who were stuck on trains for a prolonged period in the heat. We must make sure that never happens again.” He said “we have taken these incidents very seriously, and we fully accept and are acting on all 20 recommendations. We have already started the work.”

The report claims that the recommendations are aimed to reduce the frequency and duration of service disruptions, along with timely evacuation of passengers in the event of a disruption, resiliency to recover from a break down and provide better communication to customers. TransLink has mentioned in their latest remarks that one of the recommendations is already underway since the company is poised to re-do its evacuation plan. It says to be aiming to have staff to every single train within 20 minutes of a prolonged service disruption.
