Newly elected Toronto Mayor, John Tory, has managed to evade his first challenge at council before it even started. A weepy Councillor, Maria Augimeri, announced on Wednesday morning to have been newly re-appointed as North York community council, implying that she will not be seeking the speaker’s chair anymore.

Councillor Augimeri can no longer change her decision since the rules prevent a community council chair from holding the speaker position as well. Augimeri intended to go head-to-head with Tory’s pick, Councillor Frances Nunziata, who had previously held the position in the last term. Even though, Nunziata received severe criticism for her Rob Ford-endorsed style and tone of leadership. Up until Tuesday night, Augimeri alleged to have had secured 19 votes in her favour, though she needed a total of 23 to win.

However, Augimeri mentioned on Wednesday that she couldn’t go through with the fight. Augimeri stated that “I was willing to let my name stand for speaker as members of council knew and I had enormous public support.” Addressing reporters outside a committee room at city hall, Augimeri alleged that other councillors had asked her to run to present a more civil tone at council. Augimeri added some of those who would have supported her form part of Tory’s executive committee. She said “some of them are willing to lose their chairmanship of standing committee and I won’t let that happen.”
