The Ontario government website encounter another computer hacker attack on Friday night. The website was effectively replaced with a black screen and a photo as of 9 p.m. The photo displayed at the website showed a young boy urging viewers with explicit language to follow an account on Twitter. The hacker featured the MC Hammer video “U Can’t Touch This” and confidently wrote that he is “#unarrestable.” The attack affected all provincial government websites, including Service Ontario.

However, the website resumed to its normal working condition around 11 p.m. According to a statement issued by the spokesperson for Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s office, Zita Astravas, the office learned about the attack on early Friday evening. Astravas stated that “a third party domain routing service that routes traffic to the Government’s site was hacked — not the government’s own websites” adding that “no personal information or any government data was compromised and the websites remain secure.” In addition to that, Astravas alleged that government IT experts were working with the external domain name hosting provider to restore access as quickly as possible. Astravas clarified that “we take cyber security issues very seriously and we are committed to safeguarding the data entrusted to us by Ontario’s citizens and businesses.”

The Friday’s incident is just one in a recent series of digital attacks against government and police websites by a hacker group identifying itself as the Syrian Electronic Army hacked. The group effectively targeted high profile websites in November, including the CBC, NHL, the Telegraph, Forbes, NBC and the Chicago Tribune.
