Prime Minister Stephen Harper managed time to meet with Toronto’s newly elected mayor, John Tory, on Thursday, but failed to accommodate a meeting with the Ontario premier despite her request in an open letter earlier this week. Mr. Harper and Mayor Tory met at Pearson International Airport on Thursday, where they discussed traffic and transit issues.

Addressing reporters at Toronto City Hall later on Friday, Tory alleged that “I viewed yesterday as a positive day,” explaining that he felt he’d taken steps to enhance his ability to solve problems in the city. According to Tory, he explained the Smart Track plan to Harper, which would bring an additional 54-kilometre subway line to Toronto, stretching from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Unionville in Markham. Whereas on the other hand, Tory revealed to have had discussed ways of bringing jobs and affordable housing to Toronto. He said that “I came away from it satisfied that it was a very productive and constructive meeting.”

The prime minister visited Mississauga to attend a meeting with the Retail Council of Canada for a pre-budget discussion. However, he failed to set a meeting Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. Upon inquiry, Tory alleged to have not discussed the premier with the Prime Minister as he said they were focused on Toronto. Mr. Tory elucidated “I’ve got my job to do and I’ll be trying to use in a productive way the relationships I have, and to hopefully make the partnership between all three governments work better.”
